What Are We To Do with Joan Armatrading?

Susin Shapiro, The Village Voice, 20 September 1976

INTO THE non-genre of thinking women's music steps Joan Armatrading, more British than black, more good folks than badass lady of the Midlands. Joan does not sing disco or soul; she doesn't shake her booty or get up and boogie. She wears neither wig hats nor sequin dresses. In fact, she refuses absolutely to flaunt her considerable physical attributes at all. She doesn't sing about oppression, feminism, welfare, drugs, or the old in-out.
