Will Oldham has developed a forbidding reputation since first attracting attention as part of the Palace Brothers in the early '90s. Whether glowering from album covers or growling through interviews, the Kentuckian has often worn his talent with discomfort. But he's in sprightly form as he reviews his CV for Uncut: knotted blond beard, bright green eyes and woollen hat lending Oldham the air of a mischievous gnome. "I feel more confident about things now,'' he says. "Which frees up space for me to feel insecure about a whole new range of stuff..."
