X-Ray Spex: Germfree Adolescents (Deluxe Edition)

Kieron Tyler, Sanctuary Records, August 2008

ALTHOUGH X-RAY Spex split up close to thirty years ago, their music remains timeless and vividly fresh. The band might have been birthed during 1977's punk rock explosion, but there's nothing dated – they were above fashion and outside what would become bondage trouser and safety pin clichés. They still resonate. The Gossip's Beth Ditto recently said she "didn't realise they were old. 'Oh Bondage! Up Yours!' sounds like it could have been made yesterday. Today punk and politics are synonymous, but Poly Styrene pioneered that. She's a huge hero for me."
