Are You Ready for The Dead Boys?

Toby Goldstein, Circus, 13 October 1977

"THIS IS an anniversary present I got from a fan," Stiv Bators is saying, his face a mask of resigned weariness. He pulls up his Iggy and the Stooges T-shirt to reveal the angry red razor scar diagonally crossing his thin chest. Rhythm guitarist Jimmy Zero looks at the cigarette burns dotting his wrists in dismay — "I'm gonna get a sign that says, 'I am not an ashtray.'" Dead Boys drummer, Johnny Blitz, shakes his head in disbelief, recalling a recent scuffle at CBGB's, the group's home base. "I don't mind the spit and the bottles, but when somebody throws a shoe at me, that's low."
