I WELL remember a poetry session when I was an English Major at university, conducted by Germaine Greer. 'How would you describe this poem?' the redoubtable personage enquired. 'Simple?' piped up one bright-eyed young hopeful (probably me, on reflection). 'Don't you think a better adjective would be pure?' we were answered, and at once the answer was crystal clear; she was right.
