Country Music is Not Pretty: A User’s Guide to Robbie Fulks
Martin Colyer, Rock's Backpages, 24 March 2001
Prologue
Anyway, before long the room has filled with people, and I grab my beloved Martin 00028 and take the stage. The show is one of my typical solo presentations, and goes well enough. I make it up as I go along (a luxury unique to the one-man act) and spin some stories (de rigueur for the listening-room crowds... I should explain that two kinds of people come to hear me play: wry, liberal-arts-degreed middle-aged people who listen to National Public Radio and have facial hair and revere Loudon Wainwright III; and wry, liberal-arts-degreed young people who listen to alternative country and are clean-shaven and revere Pavement. This would make for an interesting mix, except that the two never mix.
