De La Soul's Mind-Bending Rap

Richard Harrington, The Washington Post, 18 May 1989

DE LA SOUL'S 3 Feet High and Rising is art-rap, a wild and woolly concept album that takes its title from a Johnny Cash song, samples sources as disparate as Michael Jackson, Tommy Roe, Liberace, the Detroit Emeralds and Steely Dan. It crams 23 languidly undulating tracks into the dizziest hour this side of Monty Python, and generally advances the form through fits of laughter and bewilderment.
