Donald Fagen: The Man Who Came In From The Cool
Barney Hoskyns, Arena, Spring 1993
Steely Dan were the muso's band. As icily astute chroniclers of the Seventies, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker recorded a series of virtuoso albums of withering knowingness. But the over-ripeness turned rotten, things fell apart, and after Fagen's '82 solo masterpiece, The Nightfly, the duo faded from view. Now, long overdue, Fagen is back – with Becker producing. Sci-fi soul, anyone?
