WALKING ALONG Hollywood Boulevard one night in 1979, Los Angeles filmmaker Penelope Spheeris was drawn underground into a tawdry punk club called the Masque. What she saw was straight out of Dante's nightmare — violent graffiti covering the walls, spasmodic teen bands playing at 300 beats per minute, dazed kids bashing into each other or sitting on the floor in their own vomit.
