Introduction

THE IDEA OF doing a book of photo-essays about live music was sparked by a desire to examine two areas: what the job of being a rock musician involved - what routes and routines lay behind the brightly lit figures on stage; and also, where their audiences came from - how different sub-cultures, from the psychedelic to the skinhead, could spawn an identity which expressed itself in music. What were the links which bound the audience to the musician?
