Shriekback's Barry Andrews: Painting Landscapes, Abusing Pianos
Mark Dery, Keyboard, June 1987
'BLACK LIGHT Trap' on Shriekback's latest album, Big Night Music [Island, 90552-1], is about a device used "for snaring unwary insects," keyboardist Barry Andrews explains. "It radiates ultraviolet light, which fatally attracts insects. I thought it was a powerful image – all these creatures rattling around, bathed in the light which will be their undoing. It seemed like a kind of danse macabre, a Charleston of death."
