Souled American: Fe (Rough Trade)
Dele Fadele, NME, 11 February 1989
STILL TRAPPED in the much-vaunted US grassroots revival's clutches, Souled American are floudering. It's no surprise that the search for authenticity petered out, as the concerns expressed became more limited. Who really wants to wallow in a morass of hillybilly catchphrases and paeans to the joys of farming? Novelty eventually raises the tedium factor, no matter how otherworldly the initial enigma sounds.
