The Breeders: The Breeders' Last Splash (Elektra)

Deborah Frost, The Village Voice, 24 August 1993

ANALYZING THE BREEDERS may be as useful as deconstructing a good fuck, or for those less carnally inclined, a strawberry shortcake. When it works, you don't really have to discuss it. If it doesn't, you just signal for mas cafe por favor and slosh away. The Breeders shoot from the guitar, not the lip. It's a mistake to prod anything but their riffs for meaning. Klonking through the latter half of the last decade with a miniskirt and bass, thrusting the little trolls in the Pixies that much closer to god-ness (albeit of the indie species), nobody woulda pegged alternative sex symbol Kim Deal for a producer, never mind a genius. And The Breeders' Last Splash (Elektra), tooled and tanked by Deal back home in that ever trendsetting territory of Ohio, ain't poetry, just a honeywagon full of pleasure.
