THE CHIEFTAINS MADE much of contemporary rock music sound a shallow fraud, when they took the stage of the Montreux Music Festival in Switzerland last week. The sheer beauty and ringing sincerity of their act was in sharp contrast to the vulgarities displayed by some of the bands that followed in the lakeside casino, where festivities continue all this month.
