WHEN U2 FIRST played Chicago, in the spring of 1981, it was as part of a loss-making tour. They played one club and a university and stayed at a Holiday Inn. Their album Boy was rattling around the high 90s and no one was busting a gut to hail them as the future of rocknroll. There were even serious doubts as to whether their American record company would pick up the option to their second album.
