Big Star: Radio City
Bud Scoppa, Phonograph Record, March 1974
I HAVEN'T HEARD many albums in the last two years that I like as much as Big Star's first, Number One Record. Responsible for the exceptional songs and arrangements, the fine singing and guitar playing, and the distinctively sharp recorded sound of the group were two talented young Memphis musicians, Alex Chilton (the former Box Tops singer) and Christopher Bell. A year ago, their partnership seemed as promising as any in rock.
