Neil Young and Crazy Horse: Phoenix Festival, Long Marston, Stratford-upon-Avon
Sylvie Simmons, MOJO, September 1996
ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER field. Phoenix smells of tent-rubber and scorching skin, the crowd red and sweating like vacuum-packed beetroot. Theyve survived the eight-hour, 12-mail tailbacks. Theyve even survived the freak mini-hurricane during Dodgy – if it had happened during Neil Youngs set we would have all fallen to our knees and sworn never to take our teepees back to Glastonbury again. With Avalon lying temporarily fallow this year, Phoenix – usually a poor neighbour on the festival circuit – has come out on top with an excellent four-day bill. None stronger than today, day two.
