New Order: Low-Life (Qwest/Warner Bros.)
Jon Young, Creem, September 1985
INTEGRITY OOZING from every tortured pore, England's New Order are not your usual mopesters. Although the breathy vocalizing and smooth synthesizing of Low-Life keep the band on the cutting edge of contemporary anguish, NO (appropriate, considering the dour tone) have more on their collective mind than the latest trends in self-indulgence. Above all, Low-Life is a passionate piece of work that would be no less effective performed on woodblocks and harmonicas. High- and low-tech don't matter much when your soul's on fire.
