NEW YORK – Peter Frampton seems an unlikely hero. Soft-spoken, he projects something of a folk ambiance, not the glitter/stud machismo characteristic of so many of this decade's nouveau superstars. But after five consistently good albums, constant touring, and careful handling by his manager and booking agent, Frampton has suddenly become huge. The breakthrough has happened so fast that he's still playing shows, booked six months ago, in 3000-seat halls when he's capable of filling hockey arenas.
