It's a delicious irony that the stiff-necked, neo-conservative host of The Ed Sullivan Show, the country's longest-running variety show and Sunday night family-viewing institution, hated the new rock'n'roll that was igniting a cultural riot across the country but he needed its credibility to drive up his ratings against his broadcast rivals.
