James Maycock James Maycock

James attended the University Of East Anglia, reading History Of Art & Film Studies, before entering the wicked world of the media.

As a freelance print journalist, he’s written a significant number of feature articles for the British broadsheets – the Independent, Guardian, Telegraph and the Times - and magazines like Mojo, the Guardian Weekend Magazine, the Observer Music Monthly, amongst others.

In television, James has worked on a number of acclaimed BBC & Channel 4 arts, music & history documentaries, including Latin Music USA; Soul Britannia; John Lennon, Working Class Hero, Gil Scott-Heron - The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, It Was 40 Years Ago Today, Ella Fitzgerald - The First Lady Of Song, and Soul Deep. Recently, he directed/produced the 60-minute BBC film, Legends: The Motown Invasion, which focused on the 1965 Motown Revue tour of the UK.

As a radio broadcaster, James has produced programmes for BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 1. In 2003, he was responsible for Radio 2’s Star Time! – a two-part series on James Brown’s three Live At The Apollo albums.

He’s also compiled/annotated over 20 compilations for the labels Harmless Recordings, Vampi Soul and Fania/Emusica. These include the Stand Up & Be Counted, I’m A Good Woman and Latin Breakbeats, Basslines and Boogaloo series.
