LIKE MOST OF his 1950s contemporaries, Terry Nelhams from Acton, West London, received his first taste of the joys of music-making as a member of a skiffle group. 'Skiffle' was a defiantly DIY form of home-made pop, spearheaded by the success of Lonnie Donegan, played on junkshop guitars, tea-chest basses and washboards, and based on various strands of American folk music from Leadbelly to Woody Guthrie.
