PETER RUDGE, who manages the Rolling Stones' American tours and likes to speculate about rock & roll almost as much as I do, suggested recently that the Real Meaning and Significance of New Wave Rock might be that those groups have managed to ignore the problems presented by sophisticated studio technology. In fact, he suggested, crudity was at the core of their success and appeal.
