VAN VLIET stepped through the black hole and never quite looked or saw the same again. Eventually taking to earth as the Spotlight Kid, he levelled out, goin so far as to play even their prole rock. With his elongated masks of post-surreal ultrapopulist blues hung down around the nonchalant animal brilliance of the Magic Band, Beefheart began to take on the ethos of let-the-people-eat Beefheart.
