Electric Light Orchestra: The Electric Light Orchestra (United Artists 5573)

Ken Barnes, Fusion, July 1972

THE ELECTRIC Light Orchestra is prime Mover Roy Wood's long-cherished dream come true — a rock trio augmented by cello, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, recorders, keyboards, violin, French horn and hunting horn, an orchestral-rock amalgam designed to fulfill the fevered fantasies of Mr. Wood's massive musical ambitions. Virtually all of the above instruments are played by the current Move lineup of Wood, Jeff Lynne and drummer Bev Bevan (with a little outside help for the horns and violin); and, at best, the overall effect of the new group is fairly astonishing.
