STRANDED IN Los Angeles for a taping of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on the day of the terrorist attacks, singer Gillian Welch, her partner, David Rawlings, and a friend ended up driving 31 hours straight in their rented Cadillac to Nashville to keep their Saturday night Grand Ole Opry gig. Though countless events nationwide were cancelled in the aftermath of the tragedy, for the venerable Grand Ole Opry, a weekly tradition for 75 years, the show must go on.
