John Cale: Welsh Underground

Geoffrey Cannon, The Guardian, 12 April 1971

Author's note, 2018. The Velvet Underground and Nico and to a lesser extent White Light/White Heat are the albums that above all others up to that time made rock an art form, with limitless possibilities. I now find I am not alone in feeling that they are the most significant rock music albums of all time, in themselves and also in all the doors they break open. These are of course the two Velvets albums that featured John Cale, and as a creative partner equal with Lou Reed ever since they first met in 1964.
