PART OF the joy of hearing "live" jazz is in the listener's knowledge that the music he has heard will never be played in the same way again. But how I wish I had some recorded evidence of the concert given by John Surman, Barre Phillips, and Stu Martin at the Purcell Room on Monday night simply to prove to those who were not there how incredibly good it was.
