Did we appreciate to the full, I had often asked myself, the sacrifices made by pop singers to brighten the lives of those around them? Pop singers have abandoned university careers; they have set their faces against brilliant futures in the Foreign Office; they have even — as did Twinkle — turned down opportunities to be debs.
