Lee Perry comes in for a landing

Richard Grabel, New York Rocker, July 1981

HE GOES by many names. Scratch, the Upsetter, Super Ape, Pipecock Jackson. Lee Perry is one of the (some would say the) foremost producers of reggae. The list of great records he has produced is virtually endless, with artists including the Wailers, Max Romeo, Junior Murvin, Dillinger, the Heptones, Gregory Isaacs, Augustus Pablo, even the Clash. Check through the classic reggae compilations on Trojan or Island — his name comes up again and again.
