Listening to The Band
Geoffrey Cannon, The Guardian, 10 October 1970
A NUMBER OF rock music bands have been celebrated, in the past three years, not just as "supergroups," but as bands composed of superlative musicians, The line on these bands by and large is that they are so good musically as to burst out of the context or rock; and so are judgeable by the conventional standards applicable to what used to be called "high art." The implication is that they are in some way "better" than rock music.
