Ohio Players: Funk & Fire

John Abbey, Blues & Soul, 18 February 1975

AS ANYONE who witnessed the one and only Ohio Players concert in London will gladly testify, they rank as one of the most colourful and exciting visual act I've ever seen. In fact, in soul circles, they may well be the ultimate. Perhaps the most amazing thing about the Players is that they are musically brilliant, too. 1974 was most definitely their year and it ended with them holding down top spot in the States on both singles and albums chart. And their previous LP, Skin Tight, topped the album chart on three separate occasions — which just has to be some kind of a record.
