A FEW DAYS ago, a friend sent me a photograph from Jamaica that hit me with a jolt: an image of myself 46 years ago, in what looks like a white linen suit, sitting at a table, with a microphone talking to the two most feared gunmen and enforcers in the ghetto of Western Kingston. It was blurred, an iPhone picture. I'd had no idea it existed, and it took me back to the most extraordinary political event I have witnessed in 55 years of reporting.
