A YEAR OR so back, the four remaining members of Poco were reacting to the departure of founder and guiding light Richie Furay by playing their concerts at almost deafening volume levels and with a solemnity at odds with their carefully nurtured image. They seemed driven by the need to shed their country-rock trappings — surely in part because Furay had been one of the inventors of the style — they were determined to demonstrate their independence both from the idiom and from their former leader.
