THE "ANYONE can do it" amateurism that underlies the punk moment (circa 1976-1977) resulted in some of rock's most profound and explosive primitives. But an aesthetic built on energy, instinct and risk also leaves few survivors. England's finest — the Sex Pistols, Clash and Buzzcocks — all imploded, their members "maturing" into serious careerists embracing artier and more professional principles of rock-making.
