The Odd Couple — Hall & Oates: Blue-Eyed Philadelphia Soul

Kris Nicholson, Circus, 28 September 1976

AT FIRST glance these two characters look like rock's answer to the Odd Couple. Daryl Hall is the cool picture of a detached intellectual, with refined facial features that are amplified when his nose takes a misleading upward turn. His tall, blond beauty stands in striking contrast to the subtle suggestive nature of a casually coy John Oates. The radical difference in physical size and appearance becomes meaningless, though, once the pair's thoughts come into play; they're so in tune with each other that they become psychic twins. This mental bond has been their chief strength throughout a somewhat uneven musical career.
