The Rufus Story: The Two Faces of Chaka Khan

John Abbey, Blues & Soul, 18 March 1975

IN A WORLD of mass-production, it is comforting to occasionally come across something that is truly original. Something that has not been begged, borrowed or stolen from some more inventive source. And so it is in the world of music. There really are only a handful of truly creative people. Stevie Wonder is undoubtedly one. Marvin Gaye is another. Names like Gamble and Huff spring to mind but once you have counted about a dozen or so, the list dries up. I would now submit the name of Rufus to this list. Their recording and concert success backs up my statement but, on their own, neither accomplishment is enough to claim originality — let's face it, some of the most successful names in the entertainment world of today are far from being creative.
