THAT FINE dividing line between fan and groupie is often razor thin and rather shaky. I used to admire groupies because they at least broke down the barrier between audience and performer in a way no mere fan ever dared. Fans, of course, treated groupies with contempt tinged with a little secret envy, and to this day no fan wants to be mistaken for a groupie. But then there is no groupie alive who wants to be mistaken for a fan, either.
