RIGHT FROM the days when Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Ida Cox and later the ladies Holliday, Vaughan, Fitzgerald and Washington ruled the blues/jazz roost there has always been a special place for women singers in black music, far more so than in white pop where girls do make it but have to fight for fewer places.
