Conway Twitty: Rockabilly Brought On Conway's Country Success

Martin Hawkins, Country Music People, April 1979

ONCE, on a visit to America, I ate a cheeseburger in a Twitty Burger fast-food restaurant. The owner of this restaurant chain was Conway Twitty, the rockaballad king of 'It's Only Make Believe' fame, at that time riding high in mainstream Country with 'Hello Darlin'', 'Fifteen Years Ago' and 'To See An Angel Cry' dominating the charts. Twitty was then, in 1971, beginning to expand into music publishing, real estate, banking, and other ventures including burgers. His biggest enterprise, though, remained his Country super-stardom.
