El DeBarge: In the Storm (Warner Bros.) ***

Chuck Eddy, Rolling Stone, 28 May 1992

El DEBARGE'S god (to whom El apologizes for his "lasciviousness" in the liner notes) blessed him with the voice of an angel. When El was a young man on the pop charts with the rest of his family in the early Eighties, he knew what his falsetto was good for — 'Time Will Reveal' swooned like the Carpenters might have if they were a 1956 doo-wop group with a taste for Cuban syncopation, recording on the moon. But though 'Rhythm of the Night', from 1985, was quite a calypso carnival, El's later attempts at fast songs defeated him, rendering him obsolete.
