Fiddlin' Philosopher: Charlie Daniels on country music, Jesus and Hootie

IN A CAREER spanning over 30 years, musician Charlie Daniels has seen and done a lot. You hesitate to peg him as "country", because his musical past has included equally strong doses of rock, R&B, jazz, Southern boogie, and even gospel (the genre of his latest CD, Steel Witness [Sparrow]). His biggest hits include 'Uneasy Rider', 'Long-Haired Country Boy', and of course, 'The Devil Went Down to Georgia'. Daniels will appear with Hank Williams, Jr. when the Southern Thunder tour stops in Savannah. CL recently spoke with the fiddlin' philosopher. Some excerpts:
