If there was any group that polarised rock opinion, it was the blunt, effective power trio, Grand Funk railroad. Bypassing the ruling elite of 'progressive' rock's tastemakers and scene-dwellers, they took their music directly to the concert stages of all 50 United States, making enemies of hip critics but friends of a mass teenage audience.
