PAUL BUTTERFIELD played a vital role in popularizing blues with the '60s rock audience but the Chicago-born harmonica player/singer never experienced them as acutely as he did 7 years ago. Butterfield, who appears Friday at Garfield's in Huntington Beach, was working on an album in Memphis when he was felled by an attack of diverticulitis that disrupted his career for almost 4 years.
