Sheila E.: Romance 1600 (I.R.S.)

J.D. Considine, Musician, November 1985

ARTISTS USUALLY sound more distinctive and less derivative over time. Sheila E. seems to be moving in the opposite direction. The Glamorous Life, her solo debut, was produced by Prince but sounded utterly unlike him. Its grab-bag take on jazz, salsa and funk moved to an entirely different drummer, and that helped make Sheila stand out against the rest of the Minneapolis Mafia.
