Snoop Doggy Dogg: What's Your Problem? Absent fathers

Lisa Verrico, Vox, April 1994

SNOOP DOGGY Dogg, born Calvin Broadus, was brought up by his mother in the working-class suburb of Long Beach, Los Angeles. From early adolescence, when he became involved with LA's notorious street gang The Crips, he was in and out of jail for acts of violence and selling crack cocaine. But, inspired by soul idols such as Al Green, Curtis Mayfield and LJ Reynolds of The Dramatics, and encouraged by his fellow inmates, Snoop decided during one of his stretches in jail to make a career of the rapping and rhyming he had been practising since high school.
