The Starship, rebuilt

LAST YEAR, it must have seemed as if the curse of Tutankhamen had fallen on the Jefferson Starship. In June, 1978, the band lost more than a million dollars-worth of equipment when fans rioted because the Starship did not perform as scheduled at a rock festival in St. Goarhausen, West Germany. Two days after that no-show, its troubled, charismatic singer, Grace Slick, one of rock's premier personalities, resigned from the band.
