Why (the) Raspberries Mattered
Mitchell Cohen, Music Aficionado, 2018
THEY HAD TO be kidding, right? "Raspberries"? That's only a few degrees removed from "1910 Fruitgum Company." And then there were the poufy hair, the matching suits, a scented album cover, and the songs that all were about, well, the titles gave the game away: 'Go All the Way', 'Ecstasy', 'I Wanna Be With You', 'Tonight'. Hadn't rock music in the early 1970s become a more sombre enterprise? Hadn't it grown up? Where did this group come from?
