Al Green's Free Music: A Groove Instead of a Hustle

Bob Merlis, Words & Music, June 1972

AL GREEN is a rare commodity in today's music marketplace — he's a third (maybe fourth) generation bluesman, although he doesn't admit as much. A national soul and pop sensation in his early twenties, Green hails from Forrest City, Arkansas (no evidence exists that he ever listened to Sonny Boy Williamson on the King Biscuit Time Show over KFFA in Helena) and now makes his home in Memphis which is also the base of operations of Hi Records (distributed by London), the legendary label for which he records.
