Festival remembers the Summer of Love

Charles Bermant, Globe and Mail, The, 14 September 1987

SAN FRANCISCO – The first cosmic occurrence was before noon, when Jesse Colin Young sang the last chorus of 'Get Together'. He let the crowd take over, and as they sang about smiling on your brother, getting together and loving one another right now, the sun broke the cloudy monotony. Thus began the commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the Summer of Love, which has become a catch phrase to describe the social change of the sixties. Saturday's gathering, held on the Polo Field in Golden Gate Park, was attended by an estimated 35,000 people, taking part in a celebration of the past that was decidedly not a nostalgia show.
